Onaya Science

Who they are

Onaya Science is a not-for-profit dedicated to translating Indigenous wisdom of plant medicines into scientific terminology.

They believe that plant medicines such as ayahuasca can be understood through more than one paradigm.

By recognising the value of both traditional and Western ways of thinking we can come to a better understanding of nature, ourselves, and the world at large.

At Onaya Science they believe in the value of knowledge systems of both Indigenous peoples as well as that of biomedical science.

They are a multi-disciplinary team of academics, clinicians, and spiritual healers who are committed to working alongside the Shipibo-Konibo people to translate knowledge of Amazonian plant medicines, where possible, into scientific data and terminology. The consideration and respect of Indigenous practitioners of the Amazon basin always come foremost in our work.

By having an understanding of plant medicines such as ayahuasca with respect to both paradigms, they believe we can learn how these frameworks map on to one another and where they diverge.

In doing so, they hope that we can develop a richer understanding and greater recognition of Amazonian plant medicines and traditional healing practices.

Their Values

  • They are committed to acting in reciprocal relationship with Indigenous healers, based on genuine benefit sharing.

  • They approach Indigenous concepts from a place of openness - viewing them not as metaphors or theology but as part of a valuable traditional paradigm.

  • They give careful thought to the numerous ethical issues we encounter and try to always act from a place of integrity.

  • They collaborate and consult with Indigenous practitioners as well as experts from a range of disciplines.

  • They listen to those who have worked with traditional plant medicines for generations and honour their practices and systems of knowledge.

  • They believe in sharing the things we learn in ways that are accessible and inclusive.

Research and Projects

Preliminary data suggests that ayahuasca has potential to treat a range of conditions, problems, and ailments transdiagnostically.

Onaya Science explores wide-ranging topics including the epigenetic, physiological, and psychological effects of ayahuasca. The team shares all findings through scientific journals, conferences, podcasts and other media efforts.
